The ACN Match Review 24/25 – Stevenage (h)

How did we play?

For a game that finished 4-3, it somehow wasn’t the most enthralling watch in my opinion.

Whilst this was undoubtedly an improvement from Oxford, what could have been a relatively routine cup win was made needlessly more challenging at times. It’s clear that we have a major defensive fragilities, and it’s doubtful we can count on outscoring the opposition as we have done in previous seasons.

Admittedly Stevenage did not make it easy for us, effectively capitalising on mistakes and lapses in concentration.

A notable bright spark was the inclusion of the likes of Kamara, Fisher and Hills. All were able to get crucially minutes under their belt and are hopefully on their way to being first team regulars.

What was the best bit of the game?

Onel scoring at Carrow Road for the first time in five years, and ending the match on a brace. Personally, I couldn’t be happier – Onel clearly loves the club. Of course, he could have had a hat trick; unfortunately his first shot ended up as an assist for Kamara.

Crucially, Onel’s first goal offered a tantalising glimpse into what football under Thorup could look like. Here’s hoping we see more of it.

What was the worst bit of the game?

Stevenage’s second goal came directly from a corner.

Our fragility defending set pieces has been evident for some time now and needs to be addressed if we want to avoid shipping unnecessary goals throughout the season.

What was the atmosphere like?

A respectable crowd for a first round league Cup game. The atmosphere in the Lower Barclay was solid throughout, including some shoe based frivolity in E block.

For their part, Stevenage brought a decent following who seemed in good spirits, no doubt helped by the spirited display put on by their team.

Hero of the match

Forson continued his good showing from the weekend, looking comfortable in possession and able to make some lovely incisive passes.

An honourable mention should also go to Sainz. Not only did he chip in with a well taken goal, but he was able to link well with Forson to make some clever runs down the left hand side.
