The ACN Match Review 24/25 – West Bromwich Albion (h)

31/03/25

Paul Buller reviews a match that took 92 minutes to spark into life, refuelling the dying embers of hope that we can still make the play-offs.

How did we play?

In a hundred years’ time when historians look back at what typical upper-mid Championship football was like in 2025, this game will be the go-to example. Lots of passing then giving the ball away. A completely undeserved winner scored by the one stand-out talent on the pitch. One team goes home annoyed and frustrated, the other can’t believe their luck.

What was the best bit of the game?

In a match where there were no best bits or even very good bits until the 92nd minute, Josh Sargent’s goal is the only contender.

What was the worst bit of the game?

The other 91 minutes.

What was the atmosphere like?

West Brom’s fans arrived with hearty lungs and gusto but, like the fare on the pitch, tailed off mid first-half. Obviously the final few minutes were fun but we were made to work for it.

Hero of the match

Josh Sargent wins games. Angus Gunn saves them. Both kept us in this match.

The End Is Near: An International Break Stock-take

22/03/25

One win in eight and a team that is shipping goals like a relegation contender. Or hoffball emerging in a rebuild year and scoring goals like a promotion favourite. With the long-shot challenge to reach the play-offs and pass Ipswich on their way down all but over, the ACN crew has used the international break to look ahead to a crucial summer with a mix of hope, fear and bewilderment.
