The ACN Away Guide – Millwall

20/04/25

Here's your ACN away guide to Millwall from our resident travel guru, Cameron Huggett.

The ground

For a relatively new ground, The Den has quite a retro feel. Four boxy stands set within the terraces, workshops and warehouses of South London.

Not only is it relatively easy to get to, we usually get a decent allocation behind the goal. Plus, Millwall’s club anthem of ‘Let ‘Em Come’ has to be up there with the best pre-match songs in the Football League.

Getting There (From Norwich)

If you’re taking the train, be aware that there’s a rail replacement at Colchester. This means that you’ll have to get a bus to Billericay before getting a second train into Liverpool Street. It will add around an hour to your journey.

If you’re driving, it’s a straight trip down the A11 and M11 into London. I’d recommend parking a little outside of central London, Epping or Stratford are good options, and getting a train or tube in from there.

Once in London, the best way to get to the Den is via a train from London Bridge. The police will usually steward you along to the away end from here.

Where to drink

Other than the usual haunts for capital away days around Liverpool Street, a trip to Millwall means the opportunity to visit some of the fantastic pubs around London Bridge. My favourite of these is The George. Owned by the National Trust, this galleried coaching inn has a large courtyard that’s great if the weather is good. It was also supposedly visited by Charles Dickens (although, pretty much every pub in London of a certain vintage makes this claim).

Alternatively, head down to Southwark Brewing Company, favourite of the Capital Canaries. It also forms part of the Bermondsey Beer Mile, if you want to try out a few other nearby spots.

Footy Scran

Another joy of getting the train from London Bridge is its proximity to Borough Market. Yes it is a tourist hotspot, so can be very busy, but it’s popular for a reason. Alternatively, try the nearby Maltby Street Market close to Southwark Brewing Company (they’ll even let you take your food back to their taproom).

Nearer to Liverpool Street is Spitalfields market, where you can find some excellent burgers from Bleeker and Naan Wraps at the next stall over. The famous bagel shops on Brick Lane are another option (personally, I prefer the white one).

Things to See and Do

An away day in the capital leaves you spoilt for choice.

The Classic Football Shirts shop is not too far from Liverpool Street Station if you’re in the mood to pick up something to wear to the match, or add to your collection (they also have a bar).

If you’re after something a bit different, nearby to London Bridge is the Clink Museum (located on the site of the prison of the same name), which takes you on an interactive trip through the dark history of London’s Old Bankside.

Fun Fact

Despite their name, Millwall haven’t actually played in the eponymous district on the Isle of Dogs since 1901, when they moved south of the river so that the Millwall Dock Company could use their ground as a timber yard.
