Wass Gorn Orn With The Flags Then, Buh?

16/08/24

We've had literally several questions about what is happening with the Barclay flag displays. Our head of flags, Cameron Huggett, explains the new course of action for the new season

Over the course of last season, this was one of the most common questions we received. To cut a long story short, doing displays for each and every home match requires a lot of time and effort from a lot of people. Time and effort that they might not always be able to spare.

As much as we would have loved to have created a visual spectacle every other week, we have simply lacked the personnel for this to be possible. Just laying small waving flags out across the Lower Barclay requires enough volunteers to give up at perhaps two hours of their pre-match. For more complex displays – such as those involving surfers – even more people are required. Unfortunately, a number of our regular volunteers have gone through changes of circumstance in their personal lives that mean that they are not able to attend every match. Moreover, everyone is entitled to enjoy their matchday without the obligation to volunteer.

Away from matchday itself, there are also the logistics identifying and replacing flags that become damaged or lost over the course of a season, as well as designing and printing the materials for bigger tifos; both of which can have quite a long lead time.

This being said, we have developed a plan for this season that should allow us to continue to bring colour to Carrow Road.

Rather than attempting to lay out flags for every match, we will instead try to target specific fixtures throughout the calendar for larger displays. This will give us more time to plan and implement something as visually impactful as possible; which we can then publicise in the build-up to hopefully ensure we have ample volunteers to bring it about.

This is not to say that there won’t be any flags on matches where we don’t have something special planned. We’re still hoping to have a few large waving flags in the Barclay for as many games as we can. We’d also like to request that people bring scarves to hold up for On The Ball City, as has been done in the past. Finally, if you would like to volunteer to help bring these displays about, please drop us a message or email.
